Every year, the digital economy is growing at a rapid pace. People are becoming more and more aware of the opportunities social media offers. Chances are you also heard about this new "digital gold rush". But if you're like most people, you're putting it off until the last minute. If you wait too long to build your online presence, then you're going to be scrambling to 'hop on the train' at the last minute – which means you're probably going to end up with less than spectacular results.
The 'Digital Gold Rush' & The Creator Economy
Influencer marketing stands as one of the most lucrative avenues for creators to monetize, with some earning six-figure incomes or more through partnerships with brands to promote products. According to Business Insider, this sector has consistently grown by at least 14% annually over the past three years and is poised to exceed $4 billion in spending this year.
A recent report by influencer-marketing firm Izea, titled "The State of Influencer Earnings," outlines the payment trends among creators. Drawing from Izea's online marketplace data, which reflects over $60 million in creator payments from 2015 to 2021, the report highlighted 2021 as a record-setting year for average creator compensation rates.
The Evolution of Influencer Marketing
Ted Murphy, CEO and founder of Izea, who has been deeply entrenched in influencer marketing for nearly 16 years, reflects on the industry's astounding growth. "If we look back at 2006, the average cost proposed for advertised content was between $2.50 and $5," Murphy noted. "Now, to see it in the thousands of dollars is pretty amazing."
The Rise of 'Nano Influencers'
Influencers no longer need millions of followers to score lucrative brand deals. Just six years ago, only creators with millions of followers could sustain themselves through brand sponsorships. Today, the narrative has shifted dramatically. Nano influencers, typically ranging between 1,000 and 10,000 followers, have experienced the most significant increase in payouts from brands. In 2015, they earned an average of $25 per sponsored post. By 2021, that figure skyrocketed to an average of $901 per post—a staggering 36-fold increase.
Why Brands Prefer Small Creators
Brands are increasingly drawn to small creators like nano influencers due to their exceptional audience engagement, the tight-knit communities they cultivate, and their genuine enthusiasm for brand partnerships, according to Murphy. "They're eager to work with brands," he added. "They go above and beyond. And so, they tend to provide a bit more bang for the buck."

Social Media Is Leveling The Playing Field
Micro influencers, who typically have between 10,000 and 50,000 followers, are also reaping unprecedented success. Their average earnings per post surged from $109 in 2015 to $1,516 in 2021, further illustrating the democratization of influencer marketing wealth.
Challenges for Mega Influencers
Interestingly, influencers with over 1 million followers saw a decline in earnings in 2021, dropping to an average of $6,400 per post from a peak of $7,750 in 2020. This shift underscores brands' growing preference for authentic, engaged audiences over sheer follower counts.
Opportunities in the Digital Economy
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, opportunities abound for creators of all sizes to leverage their influence for financial gain. Whether through brand sponsorships, coaching businesses, online education, or emerging features like Instagram's paid subscription feature, creators are finding innovative ways to monetize their social media presence.
Additionally, with the aid of AI tools, the barrier to entry for launching online businesses is now lower than ever before, allowing more individuals to capitalize on this massive and growing industry.
